It's good to be back at the office. Only after the wind and rain passed this way did I learn that Sandy is no longer a hurricane, just a "superstorm." News sources use the term like it's official, yet I can find no objective definition for it.
Yesterday, when I was still alone in the house, I heard a crash upstairs. It didn't quite sound hard enough for a tree falling thru a wall, but I steeled myself before going up to look. Turns out the minor disaster had basically nothing to do with the weather: A leaky toilet had weakened the ceiling drywall, causing about 60 cm x 150 cm to collapse and leave shards and dust across the hallway, exposing wooden boards above. A hanging strip of tape told me that my housemates had attempted a quick fix before leaving for a few days. (OK, the weather did play a part by postponing a more elegant solution.)
