Last week my supervisor told me important company news from my period of absence. The good news: I'm getting a raise and two bonuses. The bad news: There's a furlough. Not in the usual sense of a total moratorium on work, just 20% reduced hours. (I considered starting this post with an April Fool's message that I had been laid off, but that would be in bad taste.)

Thankfully, the company's generosity to its employees never ceases to impress me. Instead of taking reduced pay, I can use my allotted paid time off (PTO). And even after my three-week break and with a tentative summer vacation on the table, I have more PTO than I know what to do with. In a sense, this is all good news for me.

I get to decide which time to take off on a month-by-month basis. For this month, I'm choosing Mondays, because my fellow editor called Fridays first. Ironically, I was less idle than usual today, having gone to an eye doctor appointment, checked out two National Geographic Museum exhibits on a whim ("Real Pirates" and "Birds of Paradise"), gotten a haircut, shopped for groceries, and made my latest "Downscale" update from start to finish. Maybe I should save my online clothes shopping for tomorrow.

Don't tell anybody, but I actually wouldn't mind a furlough. 20% fewer hours for 20% less pay would be a delightful change of pace.
