Along the German river Rhine
And learned about an alchemist
Who’d worked in Castle Frankenstein.

She later went to Switzerland
With Percy Shelley plus Lord Byron.
All agreed that such arcane
Experiments were quite inspirin’.

Soon they had a challenge: Who
Could make the greatest horror tale?
Since Mary was a teenage girl,
The others must have thought she’d fail.

But Mary pondered hard for days,
Until she had a waking dream,
In which a man made life from death,
So hideous one ought to scream.

She wrote it down and won the bet.
Her modern-day Prometheus
Became a published novel, though
Initially anonymous.

Thus Mary (Percy’s wife by then)
Joined science fiction pioneers.
Her work has been a household name
For lo these couple hundred years.
