Niece? Nice

My sister has kept up a fam’ly tradition:
The first kid she had is a boy,
And the second, born early last week, is a girl,
An arrangement I’m bound to enjoy.

The difference in ages between the two children
Is almost exactly the same
As for me and my sister, so I should relate
To my nephew, in fun or in pain.

He’s shown the babe no animosity yet,
Or at least that’s my starting impression,
But he’s craving attention from Mommy and others
And might just exhibit regression.

Perhaps when he’s older, he’ll learn how his uncle
Got over some brotherly spite
And exchanged it for love that has never abated.
