My office's holiday party was well-catered, but the next day, we discovered that nobody remembered to refrigerate the leftovers. If someone had gotten botulism before we threw them out, we'd be deeply ashamed. This company does start its name with "Health," after all.

I'll be singing with a different choir from usual tonight -- one with much better backup for a bass. Most of our songs had been unfamiliar to me before practice, and they're a mixed bag. I must say, it's not hard to pick out a least favorite: "This Little Babe." I'll give it credit for not requiring me to follow tricky codas, remember counterintuitive beat values, sing almost out of range, or never breathe. Nevertheless, I have my reasons for hoping I never hear it again after tonight. First, I find it hard to get into a song that uses archaic diction like "tents that he hath pight." Second, nearly half of it requires different parts to sing just out of synch, at a rapid tempo, which means that this took a lot of practice and I'm still not confident that we won't screw up. Most importantly, the four verses are all war against Satan and transmute images from the nativity into images of war. The writer must have thought he'd struck gold with this colorful irony, but I and my family find it singularly unappealing. (Mom thinks it sounds more like a Lutheran carol, but I wouldn't know.)

Anyway, my shopping and wrapping took so little time I feel guilty. I expect a merry Christmas and happy Chanukah in spite of that. Seasons greetings to the rest of you.
