Boxing Day

In Britain and a bunch of former colonies thereof,
December 26 is still a holiday they love.
To them, it’s not St. Stephen’s Day but Boxing Day. Now why?
The origin’s uncertain, but explainers all apply
The theme of giving boxes full of presents to the poor.
Perhaps elites weren’t willing to oblige the day before,
Since causing serfs to wait would reinforce the class divide.
If that’s the case, it’s not about the alms so much as pride.
Regardless, people nowadays more often use the day
For shopping for each other or themselves, to my dismay.
It’s sim’lar to America’s Black Friday, only smaller:
When Christmas Day is over, you’re less apt to spend your dollars.
In many nations, Boxing Day’s a major time for sports,
Including, yes, its namesake. A coincidence of sorts?
At any rate, I hardly feel I’m missing very much.
The Christmas season’s big enough; it doesn’t need that touch.
