Yesterday did not feel like a Friday, because I knew today wouldn't feel like a Saturday. I spent 9 AM to 4 PM at my old junior high auditorium, accompanying a rehearsal for Oliver!. I'm definitely getting better at the keyboard, but some numbers still make me want to disinter Lionel Bart so I can strangle him -- not for bad sound, but for needless complexity. Fortunately(?), I had an excuse to cut out before we got around to my least favorite number to play (which I later learned has been cut dramatically, yay). As it happens, that excuse was the small window of time in which I could reach church for the sacrament of reconciliation. Too bad I forgot to mention to the priest my moments of spite at Mr. Bart.

Those seven hours went pretty quickly. It was better than a day at the office, despite my earlier fear. The students have the same irresponsible energy that had made me impatient with my peers at that age, but true to my mom's word, they are an exceptionally appreciative bunch. Just last year, the director tried to have this play performed but got voted down by a group of students who, perhaps unwisely, preferred Bye Bye Birdie. These kids recognize Oliver! for what it is: serious and yet serious fun.

I must admit, there's nothing better I'd've done today.
