I'm never sure whether covering disparate topics in a single entry is a good idea or not, but here goes:

1. I joined deviantArt over the weekend. So far I've uploaded only a handful of drawings, all of which have been shown either in this journal or in Paperspace, but I intend to upload more tonight. Hopefully, the account will inspire me to draw more often, instead of thinking of a gag with visual appeal and then not finishing it in cartoon form. I may also start coloring my drawings, which appears to be the norm at deviantArt.

2. Yesterday I had lunch in Baltimore with some relatives, and the conversation turned to my uncle's mother from Iran, who had a stroke years ago that depleted her English skills. She seems to understand the gist of what she hears and can say little things like "Hello" and "Thank you," but she forgets that almost nobody here understands Farsi. According to my uncle yesterday, maybe 40% of what she says is nonsense even in Farsi -- which surprised my (non-Iranian) aunt, who thought she had been understanding perfectly.

But there is a bright side. When a commercial telemarketer calls despite my relatives being on the Do-Not-Call List, he or she will be subject to a flurry of Farsi. For all their reputation of discourtesy, telemarketers are typically polite enough not to hang up while you're talking, so they stay on much longer than they want while this non-customer, pleased to have someone to talk to, jabbers on. My aunt and uncle now know to say "One moment" and pass the phone to her when the call is unwelcome. This goes right up there with the Llewellyn method.
