After about 10 months of on-again-off-again searching, I finally have a new home lined up! There had been promising words from the two homeowners right from the start, including a "tentative yes," but I decided not to say anything here lest I jinx myself. A four-day absence of communication had me worried they were having second thoughts, but it turns out that one of them was just swamped with grad school finals. The current renter, who happens to share my first name, will move out on May 14; hopefully I'll have enough time to move in the same day.

The location? Next block, two doors down from my current home. I kid you not. There are few neighbors with whom my family ever socializes, and these ones were not among them, so it was rather a surprise to see my nearest corner given on Craig's List. While the proximity has its embarrassing side, I consider it to offer more advantages than drawbacks.

My mom laughingly recalled that when my sister was about 10, she insisted on never moving away, except "maybe next door." As I might have indicated, Sarah has now spent more of her lifetime away from our parents than I have and is presently spending more consecutive time away than I ever have. OTOH, she's more prone to phoning or emailing home when away, so it's hard to say who's more attached.
