I started settling into my new home on Saturday. I haven’t gotten my home computer reliably online yet, but my landlord has technical expertise, so I’ll get it straightened out soon. In the meantime, let me update my situation from work:

BAD: My bedroom doesn’t have good insulation yet.
GOOD: It’s not so cold that I don’t feel like moving. I get just enough sleep and then I’m ready to get up with the alarm. Besides, I’ll have rugs in soon.

BAD: The shower takes a long time to warm up.
GOOD: The way my mind has gone of late, I could use a cold shower every morning.

BAD: The locks on doors and windows in the house are ornery.
GOOD: The front door opens far more easily than the door at my old home nowadays.

BAD: I am not allowed to wear shoes on the stairway rug. I have to dry the bathroom sink every time I finish with it in order to avoid staining the new marble (sounds like a lousy design). One roommate tells me to be particular about the placement of silverware in the dishwasher.
GOOD: I could use the discipline and the realization of ways I am not a neat freak.

BAD: One side of my fairly spacious room has no plugs. There’s a risk of overload when I’m finished, and I may need multiple extension cords.
GOOD: The better to cut down on my addiction to electronics.

BAD: Azazel, a.k.a. Neurokitty, hasn’t quite warmed up to me.
GOOD: Gustav the Guard Cat has. What a soft sweetie. And Azazel, being older, likes laps, so there’s hope.

BAD: My roommates didn’t have the condiments I take for granted, like ketchup.
GOOD: I’m supposed to use those sparingly anyway. Maybe they’ll be a good influence on my eating habits. They do have some nice cookbooks handy. (Never mind my past rant on cookbooks.)

BAD: There isn’t much room for my purchases in the kitchen.
GOOD: Maybe this’ll encourage me to look at alternatives more often. Anyway, they expect to replace the fridge this summer.

BAD: I don’t get my usual newspaper until I get to work.
GOOD: I end up coming to work on the early side, giving me time for more important things first.

Then there are some things unrelated to my move:

BAD: The newspaper I picked up at the subway said the local temperatures today would be 38 to 53 Fahrenheit.
GOOD: They were about 20 degrees short on both ends.

BAD: My workplace responsibilities have increased to include searching for Federal business opportunities.
GOOD: Gives me something to do on slow days. It’s also less tedious than the State biz opps searches, somehow.

BAD: My firm didn’t give me a "surprise" party.
GOOD: They gave me a non-surprise party. That’s giving me credit for my ability to catch on.

In other news, as of yesterday, my family’s cat is old enough to vote.
