Ever find yourself saying "'Scuse me" after a burp when nobody else is around?

Either it's sheer habit, or I'm unconsciously acknowledging a spiritual presence.

I'm wondering why we have to excuse ourselves when we burp but we expect to be blessed when we sneeze. I'd rather be burped on than sneezed on, as long as it's a dry burp.

Something about demon-centered superstition, apparently. It still seems an arbitrary distinction, I agree.

Yeah, in Medieval times it was believed that your soul could leave your body when you sneezed and a demon might enter while the body was unoccupied, so "Gezundheit" and the like were to keep the demons away until the soul got sucked back in. Still, if you can sneeze your soul out, you should be able to burp your soul out too, makes me wonder why we don't bless people when they burp.

Would everyone then yell "Gezundheit"?

Sometimes, in a restaurant I get a trillion "bless you"s when I sneeze and(as crazy as it is) at the same time.

Could it just be operant conditioning?

Maybe it's just an unconcious reaction to what is set in us at early ages?

For me, I do it because I like manners, and because it was set in me.
(maybe to like manners too)

Bingo.

I have burped in my sleep, only to awaken myself by uttering "Excuse me" aloud. It annoys me when that happens, but at the same time, I feel I was "brought up right".
