deckardcanineImagine my surprise this morning when I read of a chain reaction in which several local manhole covers exploded and caused brief power outages over the weekend. The paper said it had something to do with the weather, which hadn't seemed out of the ordinary to me. I was sure manhole covers have exploded before in other places, but I'd never heard of it. Thanks for the explanation, Kevin Bonsor.
Imagine my further surprise to learn that all the manholes in question were at or near the intersection of my office building, where I was headed while reading the news. Seems they had taken care of the nearest manholes, but I saw some working crews at the next block in the afternoon. Considering the district, I'm pretty impressed with their efficiency.
Too bad everybody was either not noticing or disrespecting their "Sidewalk Closed" sign. Not that what remained in the afternoon looked all that dangerous.
