Despite the fanaticism I once had for the Ninja Turtles, there was an obvious question I didn't think to ask until this month:

Where do they get their money?

I know they have some; I've seen them pay for pizzas. But rarely in the animated series did any of them work for pay. Does any official source provide an answer? Did Master Splinter retain some from his life as a human? Or is there a much darker side to the half-shelled heroes than any medium cares to reveal?

You'd think that after a while, the Shredder or Krang would order the Foot Soldiers not to take wallets on missions.

That's another thing -- they've never gone into the full implications of living in the sewers. Unless Donatello invented an excellent cleansing mechanism, they must stink like the dickens. Maybe that's why they rarely bother with the stealth aspect of ninjas.

Sheesh, what did I ever see in these guys? :-P

They collect all the coins and tokens that people drop when getting onto the buses and taxis. The coins roll down into the storm drains, and the Turtles check inside the pipes regularly. If Mikey says "Change must come from within" one more time, Raph is going to deck him.

Also: Storm sewers != sanitary sewers, so the Turtles wouldn't have smelled quite as bad. Besides, the sanitary sewers are where the alligators are.
