Started my Copy Editor Trainee job yesterday. While it has a lotta lotta benefits and carries a lotta promise, the first two days have been slow. I have not gotten anything to edit or proofread yet. Aside from a few brief intro sessions and a nice annual luncheon (how fortunate to have it on my first day), my work time has consisted of poring over a style guide and its addenda. I'm taking it seriously, reading carefully and taking very few breaks. Since I share an office with two other trainees -- one pleasantly 21 years of age -- I don't dare slack during work hours, and just to make sure I don't lose track of time, I refrain even during lunch. This is reminding me of my mom's observation when I was in high school, that I must have worked harder than any classmate.

Thankfully, if I understood my supervisor correctly, I've read enough to start editing tomorrow. Unlike reading a manual for hours, editing is not soporific for me: even when the material is jargony (a given for microbiology journals), I find it rather gratifying.

I hate starting a new job. No wait, hate isn't a strong enough word, detest would be better. I prefer it once I've been there for awhile and know my way around and all that.

Congrats on getting started though I don't envy you your position as I also dislike editing. :P I'm coming off as rather negative in this post aren't I? But honestly, it's important to enjoy your job, that way it doesn't seem so much like a job. :)

Hey, I'm no one to chastise LJ users for negativity. You may have noticed Rain and Orv complaining about mine months ago. Besides, in a journal this empty, very few comments are unwelcome.

Editing definitely made this day go faster for me than yesterday. I can expect the job to keep going uphill from here.

So who are you working for exactly? Sorry I've forgotten.

It's the American Society for Microbiology. They have their own style manual for their 14 journals, which is one reason I'll be a trainee for six months.
