For the first time since I attended college (when it didn't matter), I've received a summons to jury duty on the DC Superior Court. Oddly enough, it came the day after my sister got one. And she never got any in college.

This might be good news. I hear that jury duty is interesting, and my company will give me my full salary. But my parents get summoned almost regularly every two years, which seems unusual even for the District, especially since my dad has a JD. I hope this isn't the start of the same cycle for me.

I get summoned about every four or five years. Went to the courthouse once, then they instituted a phone-in line for jurors, so you could call to see if you were needed. Been through that three or four times now, never been called to sit on a case.

OTOH, DC Superior Court probably has a lot more throughput than our county court system.

Same thing happened to me, except without the courtesy of a phone call. Judge called us in and had us fill out forms and wait a few hours to be selected, but either the defense or prosecuting attorney decided to play golf after lunch that day and never came back to pick the jurors, so we were all dismissed. Quite a waste of a day, especially since we weren't allowed to bring any books to pass the time while we waited.

If they tell you that you can't bring a book, ask if you can bring your gun-cleaning kit.

My folks tell me that they've always been allowed to bring books. Guess the DC system isn't all bad.
