Error code 259
This has officially screwed up my home computer. Apparently a drive is out of place, so none of my settings get configured. The machine takes longer than usual to get started, my desktop has no icons, I can't use the Search function, Firefox isn't responding, and only a few Explorer cookies are retained.
The worst part is that I can't scan, and therefore can't update "Downscale." The first time I try, I get the error code by number. Subsequent tries inform me that it's already scanning, which it still isn't after however many minutes.
Rebooting doesn't do the trick. Several sites offer a registry scan, but the downloads all fail because the site allegedly can't be found. What's left for me to do??
Last night, while the computer was busy shutting down, I opened the disc drive to take out a music CD. I closed it before the shutdown was complete, thinking no harm done. Was that all it took to cause this recurring mess?

If you can, I'd highly suggest running Windows ScanDisk (if you can find it, I haven't been able to on XP and higher) to find out if an important part of the drive was scrambled.
(or was that what you meant about not being able to scan?)
What might help the most is finding a "LiveCD" for Windows (preferably the same version you're using) and use it to have a look around your drives, including trying to run ScanDisk on it.

I'm taking this CPU to the shop.
