I had never read any of Sue Grafton's Alphabet series. My mom read a few of the books long ago and doesn't remember what they were like. Not knowing how they compared, I started on the first free copy I found.

Up for another high fantasy, I'm starting The Hurricane Wars by Thea Guanzon. I don't know many inspired by Southeast Asia....

I'd been wanting to read the second Dresden Files volume for years. Sure, I could have bought it myself, but I like to give my family lots of options on my wish list, and I have enough trouble reading books as fast as I collect them. For once, I didn't wait to start on one of my latest literary Christmas presents.

Seems I'm on a sequel kick, partly because it induces me to give away prior volumes afterward. My next read is Robin Hobb's Royal Assassin.

My mom used to read Lilian Jackson Braun's The Cat Who... series a lot. She asked to (re?)read this 1995 book when I finished it. It reached #8 on the New York Times Best Seller list, yet it is not among the majority of TCW entries with a Wikipedia page. The only reason I started here is that it happened to be given away.

Up next is Paul Auster's 4 3 2 1. Getting a thick tome off the shelf ahead of my birthday.

This novella came out only last year. Unsurprisingly, it does not have its own Wikipedia entry, nor does the entry for author Malka Older give details on it. I find too little information to supplement what I read.

My next read is A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. Time for a time-tested classic.

I understood this to be a sequel to Callahan's Crosstime Saloon, but it bears no more resemblance to its predecessor than That Hideous Strength bears to the rest of the Space Trilogy. For starters, while set in New York City, it makes no mention of the saloon. Mike Callahan gets only occasional scenes and doesn't really affect the plot. It's not even a series of short stories; it's a novel.

Without meaning to, I've begun another partly comedic book, Spindle's End by Robin McKinley. Heh, from Robinson to Robin.
