Sorry, Nat King Cole

Some years ago, I said I never used a certain word.
That word was “unforgettable,” which I had deemed absurd.
There’s nothing in the universe that couldn’t be forgotten,
Especially at times the hippocampus turns to cotton.

A few months after saying this, I said it all once more,
Within the selfsame blog, although more bitter than before.
I didn’t even notice till a second backward glance.
I find so much forgettable it’s like I’m in a trance.

That said, there are some memories I’d rather soon forget.
To dwell on them does little more than make me start to fret.
Perhaps I’ll use the adjective in reference to those.
It needn’t be a good thing like we normally suppose.
