Ill-Elected Day

In early U.S. history, Election Day was chosen
To happen in November, as the ground would not be frozen
And hinder transportation, but the harvest would be done.
(Industrialization had but recently begun.)
The month is not a problem now, but why a Tuesday vote?
Most people have a weekday job, an obstacle of note.
Again, the 18th century was quite a different age:
They’d go to church on Sunday, take a horse or catch a stage,
And reach the nearest polling place within a day or two.
The next day was when farmers sold the produce they’d accrue.
Today, if you cannot afford to take a short time off,
You’ll have to cast an early vote. The system makes me scoff.
Of course, this year’s seen lots more people opt to vote by mail
To practice social distancing. Let’s hope it doesn’t fail.
