Poetry Week, Day 4

At Mom's request, I'm reprinting my poem from her birthday card:

Remember Roger Maris with his record-breaking run?
Some wished to put an asterisk right next to “61.”
That’s now your age, and I would like to use a star as well,
‘Cause if we went by looks alone, we really couldn’t tell.

This evening I killed two birds with one stone by putting the latest poem in "Downscale." I'll reprint it here anyway:

One person’s trash is another one’s treasure.
That is what many would say.
And yet they themselves might attain the same pleasure
By looking at things a new way.
A travel-size empty conditioner bottle
Is sturdy enough for a start.
The thread from that sock with the obstinate spot’ll
Help tie things together for art.
A triple-A battery, even when spent,
Forms a miniature pillar to stand.
A candy bar wrapper will add to the scent
As you make a fine sculpture by hand.
You still can make art with a pen out of ink
Or a pencil too shortened for writing.
As long as it makes people look, feel and think,
The medium can be inviting.
