I mentioned a few months ago that I guiltily left M&T Bank for Charles Schwab. Since then, I finally noticed a bank in shorter walking distance from my office than M&T: Washington First Bank. When I discovered that its ATM also allowed higher amounts of "fast cash" and charged $0.75 less for withdrawals, I figured on going there regularly. Yes, Schwab covers the charge for me anyhow, but I saw this partly as a mild favor to them.
Then I learned that WFB has a policy against providing change to people who don't have an account with them. I thought that presenting an ATM receipt would make a difference, but only the approval of a handy manager did. From the reactions of my acquaintances, this must be an unusual policy indeed.
So I returned to M&T for both withdrawals from ATMs and change from live tellers. It's possible that those tellers are so used to seeing me that they assume I'm still a regular customer. Regardless, I'm glad to do some business with them again.
