Hats Off

In older films, it’s evident that hats were all the rage.
They faced a sharp decline around the Information Age.
Today they’re worn with uniforms unless they’re winter gear
Or baseball caps; all other kinds have not been in for years.

I wondered what the reasons were, until I learned a few.
When men got sick of helmets like they had in World War II,
They opted out of hats as well, and decades after that,
A trend of longer hair would steal attention from the hat.

Of course, it seems unlikely these alone would be enough.
The prevalence of cars with lower roofs would make it tough
To wear a hat while driving, and besides, you’d be enclosed.
Protected from the weather, why not have your head exposed?

Another cause was hygiene: People came to wash their hair
More frequently than once a week—less need for cover there.
And finally, the wealthy folk no longer cared to dress
More fancily than others; they found new ways to impress.

The loss of practicality spelled doom to fade away.
It’s possible that hats will be in style again someday,
But no time soon if online memes are any way to tell,
As guys in hats get ridiculed; they just don’t wear ‘em well.
