The Funny Thing About Underwear

The funny thing about underwear:
It’s seen as far better than going bare,
Because it covers all the various
Designated private areas;

Yet in times both old and recent,
Most consider it too indecent.
Wearing just that could get you arrested.
(No, it’s not something I’ve ever tested.)

In that light, why bother to wear it?
Well, it still means less to stare at.
Should you lose clothes in front of a crowd,
They might not know how well you’re endowed.

Quite often, we get to see underwear
In family-friendly types of fare
When nudity wouldn’t do at all.
It doesn’t take a whole lot of gall.

On top of that (no pun intended),
Undies may be recommended
For physical comfort, at least to those
Who value more softness under their clothes;

And if you exercise, as with a sport,
Then certain undies will lend support,
Such as a jockstrap holding a cup.
Besides, when it’s cold, they’ll warm you up.

In another sense, they can make you “hot.”
Some types are designed to do that a lot.
(That said, I prefer that you all avoid
The shape-changing ones; those leave me annoyed.)

The standards vary by time and place,
But there is always this truth to face:
Whatever the undergarment reveals
Is less important than what it conceals.
