Badly Described Plots

I'm a little late to the party, but at the start of this month, [livejournal.com profile] kinkyturtle introduced me to a fun if challenging meme: Think of a work from any medium, and summarize it in a technically accurate but misleading way. The best entries sound much more bizarre/boring/exciting/inappropriate than the real thing. It's up to the readers to guess what's being described.

I don't expect any one of you to get all of these. I considered specifying the medium for each, but some exist in more than one.

1. A chess failure learns to dance in a group instead. (Guessed by [livejournal.com profile] kinkyturtle)
2. A man repeatedly wakes up shirtless and wonders what he did. (Guessed by [livejournal.com profile] octan)
3. A boy discovers that he can get people on his side by burning their lower backs. (Guessed by [livejournal.com profile] kinkyturtle)
4. An unarmed man fearlessly pursues an adult grizzly, on many occasions. (Guessed by [livejournal.com profile] stevenroy)
5. A teacher becomes popular when his friend kills somebody. (Guessed by [livejournal.com profile] nefaria)
6. A man enables a coup d'état just by smashing a leader's nose. (Guessed by [livejournal.com profile] kinkyturtle)
7. A group of teen boys hang out with a grown woman while wearing only belts on their torsos. (Guessed by [livejournal.com profile] thatcatgirl)
8. A king cries when a snake eats his plant. (Guessed by [livejournal.com profile] hyperion90)
9. A man cuts back on horniness (despite a very hot girlfriend) and kills his father’s employees. (Guessed by [livejournal.com profile] stevenroy)
10. A cowboy can hardly wait to spend an indefinitely long time under glass. (Guessed by [livejournal.com profile] thatcatgirl)

2 - either Groundhog Day or Memento.
4 - Gentle Ben or Grizzly Adams

Wrong on both. I may need to get more specific.

Phil Connors in Groundhog Day had no memory problem. In fact, when his girlfriend got a touch of deja vu, it suggested he was the only person in town without a memory problem.

2 sounds like The Incredible Hulk, but that's almost too easy. 10 would describe Night at the Museum pretty well.

You got #2. I knew it was pretty easy to those who knew enough about the Hulk.

Wrong about #10, but nice try.

Argh, these all stumped me. Maybe my brain isn't flexible enough.

Or maybe I didn't give good clues. Three respondents and only one hit so far.

Of course, the Kinky Turtle has a lot more readers than me.

Is 9 Hellboy?

I keep thinking "Twilight" for 7, but I'm sure that's wrong... But "Snow Dogs" or "101 Dalmatians" might fit, right?

Jungle Book for 4!

Your #9 is correct. None of your suggestions for #7 are. And grizzlies are native only to North America, so I doubt Baloo is one.

Yogi Bear or Dr. Doolittle 2 for that one?

I don't watch nearly enough movies. Sorta surprising that I even got one right!

Having not looked at anybody else's guesses yet, I'm going to take a crack at all of them.

1. The Seventh Seal?
2. Groundhog Day?
3. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom?
4. Yogi Bear?
6. Sleeper?
9. Star Wars?
10. Toy Story 2.

You got 1, 3, 4, 6, and 10 correct! Numbers 2 and 9 have already been guessed. That leaves 5 and 8, for which I'll give hints pretty soon.

Argh, how could I miss 1., I've seen it, and there aren't a whole lot of chess movies out there.

After the new clues, I'll guess 5. is The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. I thought 8. sounded biblical but I'm going to go with The Emperor's Nightingale.

You got 5, but 8 is neither.

Ah, I googled to figure out 8., so no prize for me.

Interesting, this may have been the first story to feature zombies....

Somehow missed this when it was first posted. <.<

7. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
8. The Epic of Gilgamesh
9. Hellboy. ((Boo, pun. :P ))
10. Toy Story

All correct, and now they've all been guessed by somebody!
