Is it just me, or has 2011 been a subpar year for animated films? The most popular I can think of is Kung Fu Panda 2, which I haven't seen yet. Meanwhile, the Academy Best Animated Feature winner (Happy Feet) and prime runner-up (Cars) from 2006 both have had underwhelming sequels this year. Rio is above average for Blue Sky but still an unlikely pick. Puss in Boots is mainly just cute. I know of nothing from foreign studios coming out before 2012.

If Europeans' sentiment is anything to go by, The Adventures of Tintin should have very little award competition.

Oh yeah. I haven't decided whether to see that; it sounds kinda disturbing.

I didn't care much for Rango. I liked the unusual ugliness of it to some extent, but ugly + stupid is a horrible combination, and most of the writing in it was stupid.

Tintin is motion-capture animation, which puts in on par with rotoscoping as art, in my opinion. I don't plan to see it in theaters unless it gets excellent reviews. Maybe an excellent story can save it from unpleasant animation.

If it's faithful to the comic episode on which it's based, then the story is good.

Nothing can be as worse as that one summer where we had nothing but Madagascar and March of the Penguins. That was a summer of Go Read A Book.

Uh, March of the Penguins was a documentary. Happy Feet, the penguin animation it inspired, came out the year after that and Madagascar. Anyway, I look at whole years, not summers.

Okay, so Crappy Feet came out at a time LIKE that summer, where there was absolutely nothing worth watching in the theater.
